Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The High Representative of the European Union, Catherine Ashton,
appealed for more responsible behavior and for avoiding provocations one
day before the elections in Serbia, and the voting that will be held
only for the presidential and parliamentary elections even in some parts
of Kosovo.
After inviting the Serbian citizens to decide for the future leadership of their country, Ashton focuses most of her declaration to Kosovo, the security of which she considers a challenge.
“The EU supports the OSCE role in helping for the Parliamentary and Presidential elections in Kosovo. I appeal everyone to behave with responsibility, avoid provocations and cooperate with the OSCE in good faith, so that the voting could be held in a peaceful and regular way. The agreement about the role of OSCE offers a real perspective for the democratic participation in a security challenging situation, with the condition to be respected by everyone”m Ashton reminded in the press release.
In conclusion, the EU chief of diplomacy guaranteed that EULEX will observe the security situation and is prepared to face every eventuality, in full accordance with the mandate and responsibilities, and in cooperation with KFOR. Despite the dissatisfactions between the two organizations about the superposition of their respective roles on terrain for the Serbian elections, the EU position is closely coordinated with what the NATO General Secretary declared one day ago. NATO even increased the presence of troops in Kosovo, and Rasmussen thanked Germany and Austria on Twitter for this decision, saying that the additional troops are really needed in the area.
