The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, inaugurated this Tuesday the
Ashtan hydropower plant, an investment of the Albanian government and
the Austrian consortium.

Berisha valued the investment maximally, saying that besides being of the latest technology, it is a solid basis for development.

“We are inaugurating today a real work of energy for Albania, Europe and even further. The Ashta hydropower plant is the biggest that exists today with the ‘matrix’ turbines technology”, Berisha declared.

“This hydropower plant is a masterpiece of stable development. It has respected the highest standards for safety, development and environment. It releases constantly ecologic water”, the Prime Minister declared.

In the inauguration ceremony there were Austrian businessmen and government representatives. The Albanian PM thanked the business of this country for the investments in Albania and promised other facilities.

“This is an important phase for the realization of one of the most ambitious projects for turning Albania into a leading country of renewable energy in the region. The government has signed agreements for the construction of 332 hydropower plants, a 2.4 billion EUR investment”, Berisha underlined.

“I have the pleasure to say that the Ashten Company took the first step in this Austrian project. The governent will make everything possible for facilitating its business and make Albania the most attractive country for visitors”, he added.

The hydropower plant, the biggest in the last 30 years, is an Austrian Investment that exploits the waters of the Drin River. It will produce each year 240 million KW of electric energy by guaranteeing renewable energy for 100.000 families.

After the 35 years of the concession the object will be returned to the Albanian republic. The implant is turned in two parts:

Ashta 1, which will produce energy through the “hydro-matrix” turbines, where three decades ago was built the Spathara hydropower plant, with an anti-flood barrier and small irrigation systems for agriculture.

After a 1.5 km long canal that goes almost to the Ashta village, Ashta 2 will produce energy for a second time, using 45 “hydro-matrix” turbines.
