Arvizu: New President, with integrity

The significance of the Presidential elections is closely related with
the next Prosecutor General and Head of the Secret Service.

This is what the US Ambassador in Tirana, Alexander Arvizu, declared after a meeting with the opposition leader, Edi Rama, at the Socialist Headquarters. Speaking about the next President, Mr. Arvizu hinted that the entire process is being attentively followed by the US.

“As I have said before, I try to stay away from the term “consensual president”, because this specific term means different things to different people. But I like using the term that I have previously used, which is related with active consults among the main interested parties. The President’s role is very important for your country. It is important even for the international arena, the US and other EU members, especially for the President’s role in the assignment of independent institutions, such as the Prosecutor General or the Secret Service leader. Therefore, it is very important to assign people with integrity. We can speak a lot about reforms in these institutions, but if there are no people with integrity leading them, it would be ridiculous to continue talking about reforms. This is the time to stay away from farces, and the time to walk toward the real road reforms of this country, and this is why the election of these people is very important”, Arvizu declared.

Ambassador Arvizu also spoke about the preparation of a future visit of Edi Rama in Washington.

“We spoke about many things, such as the Parliamentary sessions related to the electoral reform; the unemployment and the economic situation in your country; his visit in Presheva, Macedonia and Kosovo. We also spoke about matters that we have discussed before, which are related to a visit of Mr. Rama in the US, about which we spoke in principle. I asked him about his views for the next President and the course of the January 21st investigations”, Arvizu declared.

Rama commented this meeting on Twitter, saying: “90 minutes with Ambassador Arvizu. Unemployment, electoral reform, the challenge of all Albanians for the next President and January 21st”.
