The Parliament voting of the Electoral Code was followed closely by the
US, EU and OSCE Ambassadors, who saw the successful finalization of an
issue in which they have contributed for months.

After the voting the US Ambassador declared for Top Channel if he believed that Albania would realize better elections in 2013.

“I personally believe that this is guaranteed if the people implement it. The duty of the Parliament is there to make it possible. This was not easy. I think that they deserve to be valued for this step. The next step is the immunity. I want to be sincere with you: I didn’t believe that the MPs would pass the Electoral Code. I understand Mr. Dule, Mediu and Oketa of the small parties. I know that there have been discussions for the national correction. This wasn’t possible this time, but it is possible to treat it in the future. I want to be sincere once again with you. I wasn’t expecting this law to pass. I lost two debts, because I thought it was impossible. I think that with the lack of trust between parties they were able to realize this and they can realize the next challenge too”, Arvizu declared.

By commenting the voting of the new electoral code, the EU representative in Tirana, Ettore Sequi, declared that they followed very closely every step of the Electoral Reform, from Tirana to Brussels. The opposition and the majority showed their readiness and high level of compromise. He declared that we must congratulate both parties for the result that was achieved today. The approval of the Electoral Code amends was welcomed today by the OSCE representative in Tirana, Ambassador Eugen Wollfarth, who declared that after an all inclusive process of negotiations, this law became a new step for Albania towards further democratization”.

Fule: Continue compromise for reforms

The European Commission welcomed the electoral code amends and congratulated the government and opposition for the constructive cooperation in this area.

However, the electoral reform is not the only priority of the opinion. Brussels appeals the parties to continue with the same spirit for lifting the immunity of high rank officials and judges and for passing the High Council of Justice Reform.

The press communication released by the office of the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, all parties are encouraged to give their contribution and show constructive behavior, essential for Albania to take the next step towards the EU within this year.
