During her speech for “Albania in NATO”, the Parliament Speaker,
Jozefina Topalli, described Albania as an ideal place that in the last
20 years has changed more than any other country in the world, a country
that is facing the global crisis all alone.

“Albania is a country that has changed more than any other country in the last 20 years, and not only due to the reforms. Albania keeps increasing exports and foreign investments, regardless the fact that it is surrounded by a serious global crisis. And this is another security dimension for a NATO member country. We have approved 400 laws in the Parliament that depended only by the majority’s vote. Unfortunately, we have been unable to pass four laws that demanded a qualified majority, the opposition’s votes. The latter left Albania without an EU candidate status, but nevertheless, we keep looking forward”, Topalli declared.

Prime Minister Berisha, who spoke after a very high praising speech by Leonard Demi, preferred to focus on the symbolism of the Adriatic Charter: cooperation between parties.

“This initiative puts together countries that used to be sworn enemies, but who have the will to write a new chapter in the history of peace, security and cooperation”, Berisha declared.

The US Ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, concluded his speech by following the same line.

“The Euro Atlantic Integration is one of the national objectives that demands efforts and sacrifices by all countries. And this responsibility falls on the Parliament. For this I have in mind the Parliament Speaker, Jozefina Topalli, and the chairman of the Security Commission, Leonard Demi, and the others who help for achieving a compromise and vision for guaranteeing that the country will keep its course. A healthy debate is vital, same as the cooperation and compromise”, Arvizu declared.

The Adriatic Charter was created on May 2003, as a US initiative for helping Albania, Croatia and Macedonia to obtain the NATO membership. With the membership of Bosnia and Montenegro, the initiative counts 5 member countries.
