Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future On the International Day of Free Press, the US ambassador in our
country, Alexander Arvizu, gave a message about the importance of the
free and independent media.
Arvizu considers the free media as an important factor for having a healthy society and economy.
“The media freedom keeps the societies and economies alive, energetic and healthy. When the free flow of news and information is interrupted, the individuals suffer together with the societies and the economies”, Arvizu declared.
Then he valued the contribution and sacrifice of dozens of threatened journalists who have been imprisoned, threatened or killed, only because they tried to transmit information for the public.
As for the media in Albania, the US ambassador sees the image of the country as very mixed. On one hand he values the legal initiative against slander, which passed on February, and on the other hand he referred to the US State Department Human Rights Report, which says that media in Albania suffers political pressure and threats against journalists.
By quoting the report, Arvizu underlines: “Different reforms for the threats against the media were held. The journalists kept complaining that publishers and editors censured their work, directly and indirectly due to political or business pressures. Many journalists complained that the lack of work contracts often obstacled their opportunity to give an objective reporting”.
Abmassador Arvizu encouraged independent media by saying that the righteous fugure of Albania at the EU depends by a strong and independent media.
