Arvizu: CEC, not a farce

One day after the conference about the elections in Washington, the US
Ambassador to Tirana, Alexander Arvizu, released from Korca some
important declarations regarding the Central Election Commission and the
electoral process in Albania.

“These elections are very important for the future of Albania. Everyone desires free and fair elections, and the Albanian people deserves this”, Arvizu declared.

“For free and fair elections we need a Central Election Commission that is not based on a farce, but that is completely functional in order to establish political consensus and agreements”, Arvizu declared.

“The Central Election Commission needs to be restructured, and from there will start the composition of 89 Local Election Commissions. It is important to respect the rules, and the rules have not been respected recently. The most important is the political will. No one is talking about boycotts or to postpone the elections. No one needs a farce, but that things be taken seriously. It is important for the opposition and the government to be part of this process. We don’t have a magic formula, but there is more than one solution, and this solution is possible”, Arvizu declared.

Analysts from different foundations in Washington discussed about the June 23rd elections.

The almost unanimous opinion was that these elections have a key importance for the European future of the country, and for Albania’s credibility, as a NATO member.

Jonathan Moore from the office that deals with the matters of Central and Southern Europe at the US State Department, and who visited our country only a few days ago, declared that it is indispensable to reach the democratic standards and the fact that the elections should be held on the day that has already been decided.
