Several police vans were used to transport several stolen art works from the bases of traffickers to the Gallery of Arts.
After this triumph of the police against this ruining traffic of the cultural heritage, Prime Minister Edi Rama declared that the battle against crime has just started. But he still thinks that the cultural heritage is in crisis, promising that the entire government will be dedicated to protect it at any cost.
“The afct that a treasury of these proportions, equal to a complete museum, until last night was being kept by criminals, ready to send them abroad, as they have done with many other cultural treasuries, speaks for the alarming, scandalous and unacceptable situation of our country’s security, not only for the people’s life and property, not only for the public assets as a territory, but also for this irreplaceable treasury”, Rama declared.
The Prime Minister thanked the police officers who were part of the biggest mission ever held in Albania in this sector, and also recognized that there is a very large gap between the police officers’ salary and the millions of Euros that the art works are worth. Rama declared that these police officers have done a great service to their country.
“Regardless of the modest salary, and although they work in very difficult conditions, and although they have never been respected enough for their sacrifices and their work, they have served to the country, to their state and to their mission. They are an example for all of us, of how the police of this state should work”, Rama declared.
“Their work speaks volumes, and my words are very poor before this treasury. But here, in front of the Prime Minister, I want to thank once again the officers and Police specialists who have carried out this spectacular action”, declared the Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri.
The Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, declared that the protection of the cultural heritage is not only a job for the police officers.
“These extraordinary values, so much endangered, same as the other ones around Albania, are in the public institution of culture. That’s why the Ministry of Culture has started an awareness campaign on the website shpetothesarin.com (save the treasury). This is not only a duty of the police, but certainly of all of us, because culture belongs to all of us”, Kumbaro declared.
The action for arresting Arben Spaho from Pogradec and Gjergji Thimo from Korca was organized by the Tirana Police this Tuesday night, where they seized dozens of murals and icons in four apartments, with a value mounting up to millions of Euros.
