White smoke poured out today a few minutes past 7pm, announcing the election of the new Pope.

Argentine Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope and chose the papal name Francis, becoming the first pontiff from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.

The 76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and priests.

Pope Francis I called for “brotherhood” in the Roman Catholic Church and prayed for “pope emeritus” Benedict XVI in his first speech upon being elected pontiff.

Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires in 1936. His father, an immigrant from Italy, was a railway worker.

He grew up with four siblings and after deciding to become a priest he entered the Society of Jesus in 1958.

Bergoglio spent almost his entire career in Argentina, teaching literature and philosophy.
