Are we consuming beef hormones?

The Albanian consumers prefer beef, but few know that it contains dangerous hormones that are banned in EU countries.

An investigation led by “Balkan Insight” showed that the Albanian authorities have allowed imported cattle grown with beef hormones known as Boldemec LA, very dangerous for people’s health. The article explains that the main component is a steroid called Boldenone, created for treating horses. The investigation shows that despite the fact that Albania has several decrees against the usage of hormones, Boldemec L.A is present in the list of allowed veterinarian medicine. The consumption of this beef can be dangerous if used for a long time.

The material also shows that Albania has included Boldemec L.A in the list of allowed products since 26 June 2007, and it has been there at least until June 2012. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Consumer Protection have denied it, saying that it was taken off the market since 2009.

The European Health Commission and the General Consumers Office announced in 2010 that Boldenone products were openly sold in Albanian veterinarian pharmacies.

On the other hand, the Agricultural Ministry banned the promotion and usage of Boldenone in 2006. In 2011, the Albanian veterinarian service legislative allowed only hormones that are approved by the European Commission, and can be used on animals only for treatment purposes.

However, no European citizen is safe about what he consumes, after the horse meat scandal in Britain.

EU press outlets say that at least 16 countries of the Eurozone are sceptic about the origin of their meat products, and have started organizing petitions. The British immediately boycotted meat imported from Italy, and now the French are showing the same concerns.
