A prehistoric habitat of 10 hectares has been discovered in Maliq, Southeastern Albania.

Specialists excavated for two weeks along the right side of the Devoll River, bringing to light the first elements of a prehistoric habitat where once there used to be a lake.

Archaeologist Adem Bonguri says that the vertical pillars, installed deep in the ground to hold the floor and cottages, show that this was a neighborhood of stilt houses.

Maliq has archaeologic traces of many periods, from the neolithic to the archaic. Its culture has been among the more developed in the region, Bonguri says.

Excavated tools, decorations and vases show how ancient residents used to live in this area.

“This field was covered by water. It was a lake with stilt houses”, Bonguri says.

The Maliq Municipality will build a museum for the artifacts.
