The drought and water waste by the citizens has caused interruptions for
some Tirana residents. The Aqueduct Director, Sahit Dollapi, declared
that the water level has significantly fallen, and water should not be
wasted. If this would be respected, the Tirana citizens would have
running water 24/7.
The water level has reduced to minimal levels in the main water sources, due to the prolonged drought. We haven’t had rains for more than 3 months”, Dollapi declared.
The Aqueduct director added that the abusers will be fined from 10.000 to 100.000 ALL, families and businesses alike. As for the Unaza e Re residents, who have paid water bills at the Aqueduct although they had been using water from wells, Dollapi declared that this is something that they have to resolve with the commune to which they belong.
Some areas in Tirana without tap water
For two weeks, some areas of the Albanian capital are lacking of tap water. Most of these areas are within the city’s yellow line. The residents have made complaints, and the Aqueduct has sent experts for checking the network, but regardless, the water supply has not been regular. The water flow has been very low even when water has actually arrived at the taps. The time that the water has been running was so short, that it hasn’t filled even the public and private high-capacity deposits.
Problematic areas
The most problematic areas for the capital have been the apartment buildings at “Petro Nini Luarasi”, some areas near the former Block, Rruga e Kavajes, Ish Profarma, Kinostudio, Allias and 21 Dhjetori. There have been concerns even for the residents of Kombinat, who have asked at least water supply through deposit cars, for fulfilling life’s minimal needs.
The lack of drinking water in the Albanian capital, when the temperatures continue to be very high, together with the consumption need, have caused a great concern for the residents, the kindergartens and schools of these areas.
The only ones who escaped this lack of water are the health institutions, which, according to the law, have more than one line, due to the great importance.
The Aqueduct
“There is no area in Tirana without water supply. But lately there have been technical problems, due to the frequent interferences and the repairing works that have been made in Tirana’s water depots. However, the quantity of water that flows in Tirana is enough for 1.5 million residents. The lack of running water for two or three days has been sporadic, only for some apartment buildings, not for entire areas”, explained the Aqueduct director, Sahit Dollapi.
According to him, the greatest problem that reduces the water level are the abuses made by informal subjects, illegal connections and irresponsible waste by the residents, who wash pavements, vegetables and car wash centers that use water for washing carpets.
The Aqueduct Directory also declared that besides the technical problems and the sporadic cases when there has been no running water, another factor that has affected the water level is the lack of rains for at least three months.
“The Aqueduct Directory declared that anyone who abuses with water, who doesn’t pay or place illegal connections will be fined and their connection will be removed”, declared the Aqueduct director.
