Albania’s population shrank in 2017

The population of Albania reduced with 0.2% in 2017. INSTAT published the numbers, saying that on January 1st, 2018, Albania had 2,870,324 residents.

The population has dropped especially in Gjirokastra, Dibra, Berat, Kukes, Korca, Elbasan, Lezha, Fier, Shkodra.

Only Vlora, Durres and Tirana had a population growth.

The biggest influence seems to be the birth vs death ratio. In 2017 it influenced with 8637 citizens, dropping with 16.5%.

Another factor is the ageing of the population. The number of residents under 14 has dropped with 0.7%.

The number of retired citizens, or people above 65 years of age, has increased with 0.5%.

The gender population seems to have been equalized, with 1,438,609 residents being males, and 1,431,715 being female.
