Albania’s population is rapidly ageing

Albania is ageing rapidly, with the number of annual drops constantly dropping.

The Institution of Statistics reported that births dropped with 20.7% in the third trimester, compared to the same period of one year ago.

And this is not an isolated case, but a tendency that has kept going on for years, turning into a major concern for the future of Albania.

Last year, the number of births was the lowest in 100 years, with only 31,700 births. This is the lowest, since 1930, when the Albanian government created the demographic register.

However, the negative record of 2016 is getting even worse this year. The number of births dropped with 3300, compared to last year.

The World Bank states that Albania is facing an unprecedented demographic crisis, with the third highest drop after South Korea and Russia.

Affected also by massive emigration, the lower birth rate is creating a quick ageing of the Albanian population, a phenomenon that affects the future of economy and finances.
