Albania’s next political test

In the fifth meeting of the Stabilization Association Committee that
will be held this Wednesday in Brussels, the Albanian political class
faces another European test.

The Co-chairman of this committee, Fatos Beja, and the vice chairman Valentina Leskaj confirm that their goal in this meeting is to push the integration processes forward.

“We will transmit the real estate of things, the realization of priorities that are set so that we can exchange our opinions with the European MPs and so that the representatives of the Commission can create the conviction that things in Albania have changed. It’s an exchange of opinions and we will present a situation that really exists in Albania, in all fronts, such as reforms, the realization of priorities and the realization of the SAA requests”, Beja declared.

“Our goal is to contribute positively so that Albania can receive the candidate status, and we, as opposition, can feel good for what we have done as regards the candidate status. If four of the 12 priorities are related with the opposition, these are the only priorities that have been treated and that are partially fulfilled”, Leskaj declared.

The lack of consensus between the majority and the opposition brought the failure to approve a final declaration. Will there be an agreement in this fifth meeting, without approving the declaration by the end of the meeting?

“I hope to have this time a joint declaration that underlines Albania’s more urgent problems and needs for the majority to realize. These are matters that are related with the justice system, including the January 21st events, the criminality, corruption and other matters that are related with the public administration and the human rights”, Leskaj declared.

“I believe that it will be approved, but this is a draft-declaration. There is always an expectancy of the amends. We have the obligation to express ourselves for the realization of the SAA, and I have prepared an amend for this, for making it clear that in the last seven months, Albania has had more laws that are approached to the European legislation”, declared Beja.
