Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, placed
the first two stones on the new main square of Albania’s capital.
Rama said the delays that were caused by the interruptions of the former government have actually helped to have a more thorough project which is being finalized now, and that will turn Tirana’s main square into a great urban metaphor for all Albanians.
The metaphor the Prime Minister is referring to, is the unique stone pavement that will be placed on the square.
“This square is a reference point for every Albanian who lives outside our borders, from Kosovo, Macedonia, Presheva, Montenegro. The stones will be taken from every land where Albanians live, from Malisheva, Konispol, Mirdita, Tropoja and Manastir (Bitola). This is the most unique square in our modern urban history”, the Prime Minister said.
Mayor Veliaj said that they have recovered all investments made until 2010. “This square is much more than just an infrastructure adjustment. Democracy was born on this square. We added more spaces here for Albanians to meet each other, and this square is the biggest democratic space in Tirana”, he declared.
