Ahmed Jaber anxiously waits for every message or ring that comes to his phone. It is the anxiety of a son whose father Abdulla, Albanian mother Albiba and two brothers Ibrahim and Jakop, are trapped in Gaza.
In an interview with Top Channel’s Muhamed Veliu, the 21-year-old born in Tirana but who has spent most of his life in Gaza, where he studied journalism, in a slow Albanian recounts the confrontation with loneliness in a neighborhood of the Albanian capital, constantly wondering if the family will make it out alive from the horror of the war there.
MUHAMED VELIU: Ahmed, how have these days been for you without your father, without your mother, without your two brothers trapped in Gaza?
AHMED JABER: Normally very difficult. As soon as I receive a message or a phone call, I open it with great fear lest I hear some bad news, faraway be it. I hope that God protects not only my family but also all the people in Gaza.
MUHAMED VELIU: When was your last conversation with your parents?
AHMED JABER; Yesterday I talked a little with my father. Only very few words as they don’t have much internet. Only by writing and they delay the messages. They haven’t moved. They are in a place called Maskal Jabalia. Usually when there is a war, these locations are not hit because they belong to the United Nations where refugees go and stay. There are hospitals and schools there. But this war is different. Even these places, including all of Gaza, you can’t find a safe place to stay. All have been hit by Israel. I do not know. Very strange things are happening. Our heart can’t take it anymore.
MUHAMED VELIU: When I spoke to your father two days ago and interviewed him, he told me that they could not leave Gaza because he could not leave his mother and sister there…
AHMED JABER: Even me if I were in my father’s place, I would not leave my mother and my sister in danger and save myself. My sister, my mother as for now have escaped but my they are still in danger, my heart is on fire. My father it’s the same thing. He can’t leave his family there in danger and escape himself.
