The initial phase of works for the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) were
inaugurated with an official ceremony in Thessaloniki, Greece, in
presence of seven members of this important project in the region, and
other guests from the EU and the USA.
“This pipeline is an important project not only for Albania, but for the entire region, even for Europe. We believe that this pipeline will have a positive impact in the EU”, said the Deputy Prime Minister, Niko Peleshi.
“As every other project that creates connections, especially in strategic sectors, such as energy, this too helps improving the relations between countries, because this is about a physical integration of energy networks between Greece and Albania. This is very good, because the inter-connectivity processes themselves from the EU are being seen as part of the integration processes”, declared the Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri.
TAP will bring gas from the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field to northern Greece, Albania and Italy, an investment that would reduce Europe’s energetic dependence from Russia. The pipeline will be 878 kilometers long on land and 105 kilometers under the Adriatic sea. The distribution is expected to start by 2020.
