It has turned into a tradition that after Greek schools are open, they
start Albanian courses for the children of Albanian immigrants,
especially in Thessaloniki, where this procedure started for the first
time in 2001.
Besides some premises at the “Aristotelis” University in Thessaloniki, where four classes have been running since 2004 under the care of the “Mother Theresa” association, there are also some classes with at least 120 students. Others will start after some weeks in some suburb areas of the city, and also in the capital, Athens.
Parents of Albanian children play an important role, who sacrifice their free time to give them the connection with their country of origin, the traditions of the mother tongue.
Certainly, in all these years, these efforts would have no sense without the good will for the hard work of the Albanian language teachers, and without the support of the associations that make this possible.
Besides the material base that these children need each year, it is evaluated that some negotiations are needed with the Greek Ministry of Education for including the Albanian language in schools for children who want to learn it.
A pilot program has been approved in principle by both Albanian and Greek Ministries of Education and should have already started, but it is still unknown why this initiative has stalled.
