Albanian government announces 1.2 billion euros of investments for new roads, ports and railways

The next year’s draft budget of the Albanian government foresees over 7 billion euros of funds for public expenses, of which about 1.2 billion euros are investments, or 18% of the total. Most of the investments are ongoing, but a number of new projects are expected to be undertaken.

The two most important planned in this year’s budget are the construction of the commercial port in Porto Romano and the railway line Vorë – Hani i Hoti.

The government has earmarked 400 million euros for the construction of the port, listed as a foreign-funded project, but the source is unspecified.

Meanwhile, for the rehabilitation of the railway line, about 75 million euros have been planned in the budget, while 380 million euros are foreign financing from the investment framework for the Western Balkans, part of which are grants.

Meanwhile, the expansion of the Elbasan-Qafë Thane road will continue in other phases, as well as the Berat-Ballaban road. The Qafa Buallit – Martanesh road system has also been installed, as well as the reconstruction of the old Kombinat – Ndroq – Plepa road between Tirana and Durres, as well as the rehabilitation of the old Fier – Vlorë road segment.

Meanwhile, water supply and sewerage also receive an important commitment in this budget with 85 million euros for the continuation of reforms.

The three priority sectors of education, health and defense will also have more investments. The aim is to develop the school infrastructure in pre-school and secondary education, the officials announced. Regional hospital centers will undergo a process of reconstruction and system with new medical equipment.

As for the defense, a number of projects will be financed, starting from the improvement of accommodation conditions at the Biza base, the purchase of military drones, the completion of radar systems and new means of transport. Military education will receive increased attention with reconstructions of building.

As fot projects with foreign financing, grants and loans will be given for the Green Transport in Tirana, in the amount of 90 million euros. A 50 million euro loan for the ‘Gateway to the Alps’ program from the European Investment Bank, 50 million euro for the Blue Sea program from the World Bank, the authorities state.
