The Albanian parents try to establish their authority to children
through psychological and physical violence. The recent UNICEF study
shows that 75% of the children from 2 to 14 years old have experienced
physical and psychological violence at least once.

A national study showed that 56.8% of the children declared that they were hit at least once by a family member with a slap, punch or kick. 12.8% of the children declared that a family member had hit them with hard objects, and 4% declared that they were burned with cigarette or a hot object.

UNICEF representative, Detlef Palm, declared that this is time to not accept this thing as normal.

More than half of the children suffer physical and psychological violence at home, institutions or schools. Most of these children do not ask help from parents or teachers.

“Physical and psychological violence is a bad experience for children, and nothing positive comes out of that. People don’t think constructively. It will be difficult for them to find a compromise in their life. Violence affects children in a hidden way. More than half of the children who suffer physical and psychological violence at home, institutions and schools. Most of these children do not seek help. Protecting children from violence and abuses should be a permanent part of the social defence”, Palm declared.

PM Berisha declared that violence against children in Albania is higher than what we think, and sanctions are needed together with an improvement of the legislation.

Physical violence is more visible at young people between ages of 15 and 29, which includes 6.6% of the youth, compared to 1% that it is in the EU.

On the World Stop Violence Against children day there were appeals asking to not see violence against minors as a matter that should always be solved from within the family, but it should be reported and conventions should be implemented.
