Albanian economy concentrated in Tirana

There are two Albanias. One has an economy that is almost twice richer than the rest of the country. The other is poor.

The Institution of Statistic published yesterday for the first time the GDP of each prefecture, revealing a deep gap between Tirana and the rest of the country.

Statistics show that the GDP per capita in 2009 was 2728 EUR in a national scale.

But Tirana enjoys a GDP of 4126 EUR per capita, or 51% higher than the rest of the country.

Tirana results 2.2 times richer than Dibra, 2 times richer than Lezha and Korca, and 1.9 times richer than Shkoder, Elbasan and Gjirokaster.

Tirana is 1.6 richer than Durres, which is the second richer prefecture in Albania. The INSTAT data are made for the year 2009.

But during this year, Kukes results richer than it really is, with a GDP of 2537 EUR per capita.

This comes due to the fact that in that time, in this district was being constructed the Durres-Kukes road, which caused a temporary production increase in Northern Albania.

If the tax increase and liquidity crises weren’t enough, business in our country is now operating with harder conditions.

The Albanian business production has a higher cost, which according to INSTAT surpasses the 3% level, compared to one year ago.

INSTAT published yesterday the Index of Production Prices for the second trimester of 2011, which had marked an increase of 0.5% compared to the first trimester of 2011.

By taking all sectors one by one, INSTAT notes that almost all industry categories have been affected by cost increase.

The latest developments show that our country is not competitive at all. INSTAT gave no arguments why the costs had increased, but it is easily understood that the change of the tax legislation has negatively effected production.

The production industry had a cost increase of 0.5%. INSTAT mentions here the price increase of 1.8% for the products in the “Energetic products” activities.

As for the prices for the products of the activity “Non-energetic productions”, there is a decrease of 0.5%.
