The next scandal of the Albanian justice took place in the Court of
Vlore. A most wanted Albanian citizen from the Italian justice,
sentenced twice in absentia by the Court of Lecce to 15 and 16 years in
prison, merging both sentences to 20 years in prison, has benefited a
significant sentence reduction, now waiting to spend only six years in
prison.
Altin Hasanaj, accused in Italy for trafficking narcotics, creating armed gang, creating a criminal organization and for favoring illegal border crossings, has had his sentence converted in Albania, with request of the defendant himself. According to the prosecution, the Court should only convert the sentence and reviewed the case.
However, the Albanian Court translated 20 Italian years in prison to 6 Albanian years in prison. The Court says that after merging both convictions, the Court should apply the sentence reduction that is benefited by the defendant, because when he was still at large, he didn’t appear in court for admitting the crime and expressing his repentance, what would enable him to have his sentence reduced.
General Prosecution unofficial sources declared that there has been a reaction by the Italian authorities, which asked an explanation by the Prosecution and the Albanian Justice Ministry. But the Court of Vlore argues its decision by saying that the Albanian laws have changed for the criminal acts for which the Albanian citizen from Vlore is accused, providing lower sentences than in Italy.
Meanwhile, the General Prosecution declared that they filed a complaint at the Court of Appeals in Vlore.
