Albanian Councillors meet in Presheva

Albanians in Presheva Valley gathered at the Albanian Assembly of
Councillors to discuss an issue related to a monument that commemorates
the Albanian martyrs.

A declaration released yesterday by the Serbian Prime Minister helped heating up the situation, stating that the obelisk must be removed from the centre of Presheva, an area in southern Serbia populated by ethnic Albanians.

On the other hand, Serbia is building a monument to commemorate their own martyrs, Serbian police officers who were killed during the conflict in Lluqane, Bujanoc, an area also populated by Albanians.

The political declaration secured by Top Channel says that the Albanian Assembly of Councillors defends the right to hold symbols that express the Albanian national identity and opposes any violent action that might be undertaken to remove those symbols, including the Martyrs’ Obelisk.

The Albanian MPs will continue debating whether they should accept Serbia’s requests or not, but they claim that the threats have spurred security concerns.
