The Constitutional Court decided today to suspend the process of ratification in the Assembly of the immigrant agreement between Albania and Italy, until a final decision.
The first hearing of the case was scheduled to take place on January 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
The decision of the Constitutional Court comes one day before the Assembly meeting where the first item on the agenda was the discussion of the draft law.
This draft law was appealed to the Constitutional Court by the two groups in which the main opposition DP party is divided, that of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Lulzim Basha.
On November 6, Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, signed in Rome the agreement for the construction in Albania of two centers for housing immigrants coming illegally to Italy. According to the agreement the port of landing will be Shengjin in northwest Albania, while Gjadri will be the camp where their accommodation will be built.
The maximum capacity of the number that the center will host in Albania cannot be more than 3 thousand immigrants per month.
The duration of the agreement will be 5 years, but it can be automatically extended for another 5 years if one of the parties does not communicate at least six months before the end date of its intention not to renew this protocol.
