Albania did not vote in favor of a declaration by the European Union on the Pristina-Belgrade dialogue due to the terminology related to the event of Sunday where an Albanian police officer lost his life in the north of Kosovo.

Through the statement, which must receive the approval of all EU member states, including candidate countries such as Albania, it is requested on behalf of the European Union that the parties in this dialogue “continue the constructive involvement in good faith and the implementation of the EU proposal”.

From Italy, where he is on an official visit, Prime Minister Edi Rama gave this explanation as to why Albania decided not to align itself with the EU, as has happened in the past:

“Until the moment when there will be a second statement from the European Union, to make a fair judgment about the events, we will not align with the first statement”.

Albania’s position expressed by Rama wants to show Brussels that in that event Kosovo was the victim of a pure terrorist aggression, therefore the EU must express itself clearly and not in “rounded” language.

EU’s Borrel statement, which received Albania’s non-approval, requires that the de-escalation of the situation should include not using special forces, despite the fact that a Serbian armed group entered the territory of Kosovo killing the policeman Afrim Bunjaku on Sunday.
