The Serbian Foreign Minister, Ivan Mrkic, declared in Tirana that
history has not allowed Albania to have good relations with Serbia.
Mrkic declared that he hopes to have improved relations in the future.
When asked when would Serbia apologize for the genocide towards Albanian, the Serbian Foreign Minister declared:
“The Serbs have suffered genocide and we have remembered it for a long time. We have different interpretations to the history, and we must refer to this period as less as possible. Let’s leave it to the historians and the scientists. We, as politicians, must make visible only the things that unite us”.
His meeting with the Albanian Foreign minister, Edmond Panariti, was followed with protests from the Red and Black Alliance and the Party for Justice, Integration and Unity.
The Albanian diplomat declared that Tirana is concerned about the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, two sovereign countries that are walking on the right path.
Panariti declared that he discussed with his Serbian homologue about the mutual recognition of diplomas, reiterating that more work is needed for the economic cooperation.
“The life of the Albanians in southern Serbia needs to be improved. I asked the Serbian authorities to distance themselves from the violent acts against the Albanians”, Panariti declared.
The Minister added that Kosovo’s recognition would help both countries towards the European future.
Mrkic had previously declared that his visit in Tirana is very important to recover the relations in the region.
Mrkiç: Mutual development
The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, held a visit with the Serbian Foreign Minister, ivan Mrkic.
Mrkic declared that in his visit he was bringing the friendly message of the new Serbian government for the Albanian people.
“Our peoples have lived close to each other for centuries, and it would be in our best interest to base our cooperation on the good relations that were held during most of these centuries”, Mrkic declared.
He underlined that although there are differences in the mutual relations, in the future we must focus on the good mutual interests.
Berisha declared that the Albanian government is interested to start a new chapter of positive relations between the two countries and that such a cooperation would be on the region’s interest and the mutual goal to be part of the European Union.
The Prime Minister also underlined that the differences between the two countries should not be an obstacle for developing good mutual relations, and that despite the past, the future of these relations should be that of friendship and cooperation in all areas, such as education, culture, tourism and economy.
The Prime Minister declared that the improvement of the infrastructure will ease the economic and cultural exchanges, such as the construction of the Nis-Merdara highway and of a railway that would connect the Albanian ports with Central Europe, creating greater cooperation spaces in the future.
