Albania says Greece searching oil in Ion

The national agency of natural resources confirms that Greece has
started the preparations to search for oil in the border with Albania, but
denies that they affect a controversial part of the maritime
pact that was rejected by the Constitutional Court.

“They are searching in the southern part of our border, but it is in their territory and has nothing to do with us”, declared Përparim Hajno, director of the Hydrocarbon Department in the agency.

The Ionian Sea has turned into one of most coveted areas for international oil companies. The Albanian government has mandated a foreign company that is searching oil in the Albanian part of the sea, from the Bay of Vlore and to the border with Greece. The agency says that the geological areas where Albania is searching and Greece is expected to search do not conflict with each other and denies of having any conflicts there.

“The search that is being performed by this company in Southern Albania, do not risk to get involved by the current debates about the border. Oil is not cut with a knife in the border. Everyone has the right to search in his own part”, Hajno declared.

The studies of the company show that both areas are far from each other and there is no conflict. But the area that the Greeks want to change through the maritime borders pact and that has spurred controversies, is it rich with oil?

“I can say that the Albanian part has good perspectives for oil, even better than the Greek one”, Hajno declared.

Albania currently has 7 agreements for searching oil and gas, for which they have mandated three companies, “Petromanas”, which is searching the underground galleries and two others that are searching in the sea, “San Leone” and “Kaprikorn”, where is included the area of the Greek border.

Papandreu: Searches to start very soon

The Greek Prime Minister, Jorgo Papandreu announced that the searches for oil and gas in the Aegean and Ionian seas will start very soon.

During a ceremony held in Thessalonica for the international fair of this city, Papandreu declared that very soon they will start searching in the sea, for enriching the Greek citizens who deserve to benefit from what the nature of their country has given them.
