Albania has a positive trend in terms of its demographics, as in global population figures the country shows a better ratio in terms of birth rate, reduction in the number of deaths and net migration in relation to other countries in the region.
While the population of Southeast Europe, of which we are a part, is suffering a population contraction of almost 2% per year, Albania is among the countries with a slower rate of 0.23% for the year 2023.
According to the figures of the World Population Review network, on the European continent, only Spain and Germany have performed better than Albania.
The populations of neighboring countries are shrinking at a faster rate than Albania’s from 0.5% to 1%, with Serbia recording the most significant decline during 2023. Greece, according to statistics, has a sudden increase in deaths and a decrease in the number of births, risking what is called a “population collapse”.
Extensive statistics show that almost all EU and former Soviet Union countries are suffering from this phenomenon. Moldova tops the ranking for the highest population decline with 3.4%, while the top five countries also include Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
Meanwhile, only countries such as India, Argentina and Nigeria have experienced an increase in population, while Syria in the Middle East was the world’s highest in population increase for 2023.
