Alarming pollution from urban waste in streams of Gjirokastra, three tons are discharged every day

Nearly 3 tons of waste end up every day in the mountain streams that run through Gjirokastra.

During the months of coronavirus isolation, the situation has become even worse. This is one of the most beautiful mountain streams next to an entrance road to the city of Gjirokastra.

As can be seen from the pictures, the stream is overflowing with debris. Gjirokastra is known for its rugged terrain and almost 1/10 of the daily waste here ends up in streams, despite the fact that there are bins on both sides of the road.

Starting this week, the municipal council in Gjirokastra is expected to approve the first penalties for polluters.

“We have consumed all the steps with the citizens. The time has come to say SOS because it is a city in the UNESCO heritage and does not deserve this panorama in its streams. I have asked the municipal council to impose a fine of up to 5,000 lek, a fine that will go to the door of each polluter”, says the representative of the city municipality.

Although a city included in the UNESCO list and visited by thousands of local and foreign tourists, Gjirokastra is ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the South of Albania, while the main cause of this pollution is the lack of civic awareness.
