The southern tower of the Gjirokastra castle has a crack that was identified 12 years ago, which is now getting deeper.

The castle has three cracks in total but on January 18th the southern tower was much deeper than 22 days later.

The regional director of cultural monuments, Albert Kasi, said that the crack was deepened with only 1 cm in the past 15 years and that the situation is not dangerous.

The Italian studio, Torresi, realized a study in 2006 since Gjirokastra is on a seismic territory. The report recommends measures for reducing the risk, but no intervention was made so far.

UNESCO focused on this problem once again in 2014, with pictures showing the crack of the wall.

On January 18th, a massive landslide under the southern tower raised alarms among specialists, but officially, no assessment was made.
