The air pollution in Tirana goes 20% beyond the norm allowed by the European Union.
The most recent measures were made by the National Agency of Environment in the Durres Road, where a monitoring station was installed near the Ministry of Environment. Another one was installed at the Sami Frasheri road, near the Environment Agency. Both measurements show a high level of pollution.
“We have made measurements in two stations. The first results show a 20-30% level higher than the European Union norms. This is the result for March. The hot months of summer might bring an even worse situation than this”, declared Julian Beqiri, Director of the National Agency of Environment.
Traffic, constructions and old methods of street cleaning influence in the high level of pollution.
The Director of the National Agency of Environment underlines that a rigorous air measurement will be conducted in nine cities, based on the parameters of the European Union.
“We will monitor pollution in nine cities for the first time in Albania, based on the norms of the Eu. The monitoring stations were also made possible by European Union projects”, Beqiri declared.
The National Agency of Environment also has a mobile monitoring station which will be sent in hot areas that are considered as very polluted even by businesses, such as factories or lime kilns.
The Ministry of Environment is committed to reduce the level with 30% throughout the country by disciplinating all factors that affect the quality.
