In universities there are about 31,000 places in auditoriums for first-year students, but with the completion of two rounds of registrations, almost half have remained unfilled, which shows the continuous decrease in the number of students in Albania.
While medicine and the branches of technology and engineering lead the preferences in higher education, natural sciences or humanities programs are almost at risk of closure. Archeology and cultural heritage is one of the least interesting programs at the University of Tirana, with only 5 registrations; followed by environmental sciences with 6 students.
Physics was chosen by only 7 students and chemistry by 9. The ratio of places in higher education institutions compared to the number of students is not proportional.
Interest is also low in the branch of geography, where 104 places for students have remained free, out of 152. Even in language, literature and journalism, almost half of the quotas have remained empty. At the University of Arts in Tirana, students are counted on the fingers of their hands; especially in the programs of musical instruments, even though the quotas are few.
For example, there are zero records in the trumpet or bassoon branch. But even in acting, where there was a high interest before, now seems to be shrinking, with only 8 students registered. Also the numbers of new students in the academic branches at the Agricultural University are shrinking, despite the fact that some rural development programs are part of the priority programs and the reward is a scholarship equal to the minimum wage.
But the most endangered are the universities of the districts, such as Gjirokastra with over 80% of the branches failing to meet the criterion for at least 10 students for a program.
