Henk Van den Dool, the Ambassador of the Netherlands in Albania, raised
the alarm on the weekly newspaper “Java” for Albania’s risk to floods,
after this heavy snow starts melting. But, according to him, the Dutch
expertise has found a deaf ear.
“I think that it is very important to give the support in a coordinated way, so that this natural disaster cannot fall prey to profit political abuses. The Albanians have been blocked in the snow and don’t deserve becoming object of political ping-pong. I wish to express my concern about what could happen when the snow starts melting, which is unavoidable. Big floods could be unavoidable. Last year, the floods that happen to Northern Albania brought some Dutch experts, who concluded a series of propositions on how these problems could be managed in the short-term, mid-term and long-term period. It is really unfortunate that now, more than one year ago, I have to witness that no concrete actions were realized.”
During this interview, Ambassador Van Den Dool mentioned the political situation by underlining the 12 key priorities. He valued the steps taken so far, such as the election of the Ombudsman and the passing of the laws that required qualified majority, but he noted that the political agenda is still led by events that damage these processes, when in fact they need more persistence and energy.
The Dutch Ambassador predicted that the Presidential election will not be easy, but he believes that it is possible to find a candidate that can receive the votes of as many MPs as possible.
The Ambassador also valued the resignation of Kreshnik Spahiu, by declaring that he noted “a sudden presentation of the Albanian nationalism, which has not been articulated in the last two decades. It could be a reawakening for the political class. He sees the Red and Black Alliance that is attracting many urban and well-educated young people.
The Ambassador declared that the January 21st events are being delayed too much, and this is not good for justice, but very bad for the image of Albania, and very stressing for the relatives of the victims.
