The Central Election Commission closed the door to Sali Berisha as the chairman of the Democratic Party, leaving him as the only way to participate in the local elections by the registration under the umbrella of a coalition.
But before the ink of the decision had dried, another blow came to Sali Berisha and his supporting faction in DP, this time from his opposition colleague Ilir Meta who hurried to publish the list of Tirana’s municipal councilors without waiting for his ally.
“We will support the primary candidates all over the country, but DP will have its advisers, we will have our advisers all over the country”, Meta said today.
He surprised many with his statement which came only 24 hours after he met with the US ambassador in Tirana, Yuri Kim.
But the head of the Freedom Party, Meta, denied that pressure on his ally was an American order.
“I didn’t have any kind of pressure, we had a very constructive conversation”, said Meta.
If they want to run together, Meta and Berisha should have only one list of municipal councilors. Negotiations between the two allies apparently did not go well, and Ilir Meta has decided to increase the pressure on Sali Berisha, while reducing the time for registering coalitions in the elections.
