Aflatoxin milk alarm

“There’s a Ministerial order that will go to the Public Health Institution for testing samples in every public institution. Same as the Food Control Authority, we will also do our own tests”, declared the Director of Policies at the Health Ministry, Pellumb Pipero.

While the results of the EU accredited labs in Netherlands and Italy will arrive this Saturday, the Director of Policies at the Health Ministry, Pellumb Pipero, declared that they will start an epidemiologic investigation regarding the milk and other dairy products.

“We will investigate all cirrhosis and cancer cases to see its relations with milk consumption, the geographical spread and its distribution in public or non public institutions”, Pipero declared.

The companies are asked to voluntarily remove the problematic lots from the market, and while there are no labs in Albania for these tests, the Food Authority and private will send samples in the EU countries.

Milk producers protest

Myzeqe farmers say that the news has brought big problems in their area, creating large amounts of stock. Gradizhte farmers protested today saying that they are losing their only financial resources.

Farmers guarantee that their production has good quality, and they want the situation to be solved as soon as possible, since their economy would be at risk.

The Food Authority declared yesterday that there could be levels which are higher than the norms allowed in the EU, as warned by the Kosovo authorities.

The Food Product director explained that tests will be made by labs in EU countries, and the subjects have been asked to voluntarily remove the suspected products.

“We are working to find the origin, since the industry has always been under our control”, declared the Food Authority leader, Artan Gjergji.
