Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future “Justice for January 21st” was the name of the memorial activity for the
four victims of January 21st, held by the Socialist Party at the
University of Arts.
The relatives of the four victims, whom the opposition calls the “martyrs of January 21st”, have transmitted their pain one year after, without their family members who passed away tragically.
“He told us that he would go with his friends in Tirana, and join the demonstration. He told me that he would return home by the evening, but he never turned back alive. Since then, my three-year-old daughter, Amelia, has asked me where her father is. I tell her that he has immigrated to Italy, to buy Amelia beautiful clothes, because he loves her very much. But the time of truth is approaching, she’s growing up. One day I will have to tell her what happened, and even to my other and younger daughter. What law did Aleks infringe? Which people did Aleks violate? I will visit his grave one year after the murder, and it will be even more difficult that when we buried him, because we still have no answer from justice. For us, as a family, there are no doubts about the people who ordered this crime. We have asked and will always ask, for as long as we will breathe, retaliation through justice”, declared Rajmonda Nika, wife of Aleks Nika.
While the niece of Hekuran Deda, another January 21st victim, said:
“This government killed us twice, when they offered us money in exchange of silence for the murder. Berisha sent us someone who would offer the photo of our brother’s killer. They offered money only for allowing Berisha to have the coffee of the funeral in our house. We are highlanders, and our honor doesn’t allow selling our children’s blood for money”.
The wife of Faik Myrtaj accused Prime Minister Berisha of killing her husband on January 21st.
“Berisha killed my husband in the middle of the boulevard, with the bullets of the National Guard. He killed him twice with the offences and slanders that he threw against my husband. A few months later he killed even my son, Bardhosh. For a wife, it is difficult to lose her husband, but for a mother is a torture to bury a son, a son that she grew through many problems and efforts. I accuse Sali Berisha. I buried half of my family. I saw on TV how Berisha’s National Guard shot my husband, and all the innocent people that were present. I heard Berisha and Ilir Meta offend them “bandits, dirty people, plotters”, and I have been obliged to close my ears and eyes”, said the wife of Faik Myrtaj.
The opposition leader, Edi Rama, declared that the Prime Minister sent a message through these murders. Rama expressed his optimism that the killers will be brought to justice. According to him, the opposition is not the only one who is seeking justice, but it has the help of the USA.
“The visits to the four grieving families were painful, in the surreal reality of the daily life without a future, of these families that were broken by the bullets and heavy words of this government. We saw them on the end of the roads without ways, which led to the nights without dreams and the days without light, in the search of the children’s food. Families, as if the murderous hand had picked them with care for sending a message from north to south of Albania, to those who lived in villages and to those that left their villages for “The America” in the sad suburbs of the capital. We are not looking only for justice. Albania is not abandoned, in the mercy of fate and of the government that wants to become its owner through force. The justice that Albania is seeking, is being asked each day, with a clear voice, even by the democratic world, the friends and irreplaceable partners of the Albanian people, in the road that will detach us from the past, starting with the American friends, who have offered the services of the biggest investigative agency in the world, the FBI. Without the support of the USA for the January 21st investigations, Albania would be unable to see a ray of hope in the mirror that is covered with the still warm blood of one year ago, because the undeniable evidence of the FBI will shed a light that the power of corruption and the corrupted courts will not be able to hide. After the January 21st crimes will be solved, the Albanians will have a better country, where the children who today write poems for their past, will start writing the poems of their future”, Rama declared.
The crowded hall also had many tearful common citizens, when the relatives showed their pain for the loss of their dear ones; a pain that will continue for as long as justice will not say its word.
