Although there is enough information for avoiding abort, figures in Albania remain high.
In 1000 pregnancies, 272 are abortions, or almost 10,000 each year. Gynecologists recommend the usage of contraceptive methods.
“The average of the last years has been 4-5 abortions per day. We emphasize that abortion intervention is riskier than the usage of contraceptives”, says the Mirela Rista, gynecologist at “Koço Glozheni” Maternity in Tirana.
According to Rista, there is an increasing tendency of young girls who seek abortion when remaining pregnant after the first intercourse without using contraceptives. She also wants to make young women aware that there are contraceptives that do not stimulate weight gain.
According to the studies, only 11% of the women use contraceptives, and 59% of the couples still use the traditional method.
