Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Zamira Durda is one of the people who lost their relatives in the Gerdec
tragedy. She lost her 7 year old son, the sorrow for whom turned her
into the heroine of the efforts for seeking justice about this tragedy.
For four years she has led the protests against the investigation delay, while on the day of the verdict, she rebelled on the courtroom.
Zamira keeps all the objects of her son, Erison, who was killed by the missiles that exploded in Gerdec: his toys, his only shoe that remained on the scene, and his ABC book, that remained at the letter “Th”.
When the Court of Tiarna started an unprecedented delay of the trial, Zamira Durda turned into the symbolic protest for justice. She protested in front of the court, filed suits and protested in front of the General Prosecution. She systematically her protest turned into a cause against the injustice that was being made with Gerdec.
“I am seeking justice based on the laws. I have been following the rules of this state for four years. I will seek justice, but if nothing will come out from following the rules, Zamira knows what to do. I accuse the state, because their duty was to protect us. We were not in a state of war, so that it was up to me to protect my son from missiles. We have institutions that we pay for protecting our lives. Why shouldn’t I seek justice? Who killed my son and why? These institutions have not returned any answer. I have sent an open letter to the President and Parliament, together with other relatives of the victims. The Prime Minister has letters, but no reaction, no answer”, Zamira declared.
Besides her son, on the March 15th tragedy Zamira lost her father and sister in law. Since then she has been taking medicine for keeping the anxiety under control.
“I keep taking medicine even today, but in lower doses. I take medicine against the stress, anxiety and chest pains”, Zamira declared.
This woman is the only person that has been present in all court sessions. She was present in all failures and has raised her voice in the court room after every delay, from one court to another.
She was in the last session too, when the court gave the verdict that sentenced the defendants only for property destruction and power abuse. After three years in a trial, she received no answer and no one was sentenced for manslaughter, although 26 people died.
“The judge did not react about the victims, but about the destruction of houses, walls, lands, cattle. These seem more important than the human lives. The human life seems to be the cheapest, and we defend wealth. The state institutions are responsible, starting from the Commander of Armed Forces. How is it possible that he didn’t know where the ammunition was going”, Zamira Durda declared.
