Five years after the passing of the decriminalization law, a recent poll shows that 52% of respondents think that the incriminated are not discouraged enough from being part of politics and not crossing the threshold of assembly.

Respondents of the Institute of Political Studies poll hold directly responsible party leaders for taking into politics or appointing incriminated individuals to public office.
At a time when Albanians will go to the polls on April 25, the responses of surveyed citizens showed that 37% think that the legislation and the current process of decriminalization has not yet prevented electoral financing by incriminated or “tough” individuals .

“Although the figures look positive, everyone thinks that the result has been minimal and Albania’s chances to really have an uncorrupted political elite and without criminal records, have not been met. Political parties have not excluded or suspended any individual and the structures they have set up have been non-functional or merely formal,” said the representative of the institute.

But what would be the final solution to remove incriminated persons from politics?

“Political parties, if it turns out that they have an individual incriminated MP, should not have the right to replace him but lose the mandate to receive penalties as they do with the current legislation on the issue of gender quotas, let them also receive incriminated individuals,” he added.
