At least 9 people lost their lives in a fire caused by a high-flow oxygen device in the intensive care unit for the new coronavirus (COVID-19) SANKO University Hospital in Gaziantep, Turkey, Anadolu Agency reports.
A statement from SANKO University Hospital said the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in the hospital’s COVID-19 intensive care unit as a result of the high-flow oxygen equipment and the impact of the oxygen system.
As a result of the first intervention by the hospital staff and the rapid intervention of the Gaziantep firefighting team, the fire was brought under control in a timely manner, while 9 people lost their lives.
The statement said that other patients who continue treatment in intensive care were evacuated to other hospitals and that a judicial and administrative investigation has been launched into the matter. A written statement from Gaziantep prefecture states that the fire in the hospital broke out around 04:45 in the morning.
“11 patients have been evacuated to nearby hospitals. No one was injured in the following fire. Our teams have taken the necessary measures and continue inspections. Allah’s mercy be upon those who lost their lives and express our condolences to the bereaved families,” the prefecture said in a statement.
