70% of the olive oil sold in the Albanian markets is falsified, putting the consumers’ health in danger.
This concern was raised by some oil production companies during a meeting with the National Food Authority, who requested higher inspections of imported and domestic goods.
“The market is informal and not organized by the rights standards, because there are falsified oils and we are very convinced about this. It might go up to 60-70% of the market|”, says Valentina Postoli, from the Olive Oil Production Association.
The National Food Authority, Afrim Bakaj, warned for harsher measures, even criminal prosecution, for abusing businesses.
“We are determined to not tolerate and bring the law violators to justice, all of them wo try to smuggle or import and produce goods that bring safety concerns”, declared Afrik Bakaj, Director of the National Food Authority.
NFA has seized several amounts of olive oil and are currently tracking the source.
