Five young people who had also family relations lost their lives
asphyxiated in an abandoned coal mine near the Beragozhd village,
Pogradec.

Their relatives asked the help of the police, after noting that they had entered in a gallery to collect scrap metal and never got out.

They had dug a passage to the gallery which had been abandoned and closed 20 years ago. When inside, they used a generator for light, but the asphyxiating gas took the lives of all of them.

The victims are three brothers Edison, Ledjon and Nertil, respectively 23, 24 and 25 years old, and their two cousins, Sazan and Arjan Hamolli, 24 and 29.

An excavator had to work for several hours to open the closed entrance of the gallery.

The police has been able to pull out only three of the bodies. They are unable to pull out the others, due to the high carbonic gas inside the gallery. The research will start again tomorrow.

The main cause of this tragedy seems poverty. Residents say that these boys were frequently obliged to put their lives in danger just for a few money coming from the scrap metal.

“Those young men entered the gallery because of poverty, and this is what happened”, residents say.

Librazhd, two die inside mine

Two other victims have died today in the Albanian mines.

Another incident, similar to the first one, took place in Librazhd. Drini Bogdani and Ali Danga entered the gallery to collect scrap metal, but an accident took their lives.

The Parliament Member of this area, Taulant Balla, asked the police to find the cause of this tragic death.
