This January 17 marks the 556th anniversary of the death of the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu. Gjergj Kastrioti, National Hero of Albania, led the fight for freedom against the Ottoman occupation and for the unification of the Albanian people.
His figure is related to the century-long struggle against the Ottoman occupation. After liberating Kruja on November 28, 1443, he raised the flag of the Kastriots and on March 2, 1444, in the Cathedral of Shënkolli in the city of Lezha, Skënderbeu held the First National Assembly where, as a leader, he emphasized the necessity and importance of the union of Albanians. Historians and collectors remembered today our hero at the National Book and Reading Center.
The 556th anniversary of the hero’s flight was also remembered by the Bektashian Faith Assembly, along with the 103rd anniversary of the first Bektashian congress and the commemoration of their leader Baba Ali Tomorri.
Gjergj Kastriot Skëndebeu remains a source of inspiration on the wars for freedom and independence of the Motherland, especially during the National Renaissance. On the other hand, his then contribution to the defense of Christianity makes him a hero not only of ours, but also of countries of Europe.
