A strong earthquake was registered in Central Albania this morning, at 3
am. The Geophysical Institution declared that the epicenter was in
Belesh, and the magnitude was 5.2 Richter.
After the first one there were seven others, the highest of which was 4. The depth was 2 to 14 kilometers, and the earthquake was felt even in the capital, Tirana.
Serious damages have been verified in some residential and school buildings. Three apartment buildings were damaged in Cerrik, together with others in the suburbs.
Some houses have been damaged in Belsh and Gostime. Authorities have closed the high school in Belsh, which has been damaged seriously. The building was damaged even before.
These are the first damages that have been reported. An emergency headquarters was established in Elbasan to verify the damage.
The residents have left their houses in panic, and many have slept outside due to the frequent land shakes.
Buildings damaged in Belsh and Hysgjonaj, Lushnje
THe Head of Civilian Emergencies at the Belsh Municipality, declared that two houses are not inhabitable anymore.
Blerim Tafani: “Two buildings have been damaged and they risk collapse at any moment. Another earthquake would be fatal for the residents”, Tafani declared.
“Other houses have been damaged, but they don’t appear to be at risk’, he added.
Problems have been verified in the Hysgjokaj Commune, Lushnje, where some houses have been seriously damaged.
