Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Gerdec tragedy keeps causing victims. Tushe Osmani, 50 years old,
has committed suicide yesterday after losing her 19-year-old daughter in
the ammunition blast of 15 March 2008, and her husband in 2009, who
committed suicide.
Her husband drank poison in a moment of depression, while Tushe remained only with her niece, the daughter of her daughter, whom she accompanied everywhere. She used to tell her relatives that she was unable to secure enough food for her niece, with a 50 USD monthly payment that was given by the state as pension, money that weren’t enough for anything.
E.Kruja, one of the survivors, says that she met her 24 hours before killing herself, and heard her saying with tears in her eyes that she was unable to feed her niece, which was holding her hand.
When she was supposed to enjoy the arrival of her niece, the 50-year-old had to suffer the loss of her daughter and her husband, together with the negligence of the state. After the death, the government had given them only 15.000 ALL (150 USD).
Tushe Osmani was found at her last breath in her home, after taking a considerable amount of pills. She was sent to hospital, where she passed away.
Her husband, Kujtim Osmani, did the same thing three years ago. He had no shelter and he had been fired from his job in the Vore Municipality. He appealed for help several times, but he received no response.
Her daughter died on 15 March 2008 while working in the ammunition dismantling plant in Gerdec, where a powerful blast of 700 tons of ammunition caused the death of 26 people in total.
