16 countries offer aid for earthquake affected victims

14 EU members and two other non-member states have joined forces to help Albanian families affected by the September 21st earthquake.

The aid was handed over to the State General Director of Material Reserves in a ceremony that was attended by the Defense Minister, Olta Xhacka; the EU Ambassador to Tirana, Luigi Soreca, and ambassadors of the contributing countries.

Minister Xhacja thanked the contributing countries for helping out in this hard time and assured the affected citizens that their homes will be rebuilt.

The Itlian Ambassador and Slovenian ambassadors, Alberto Cutillo and Peter Japelj, praised the reaction of the Albanian authorities.

The EU Ambassador, Luigi Soreca, underlined that these countries started moving two days after the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

“We are proud of the effectiveness of our EU Civil Protection Mechanism. It took only a few days after its activation to set up a team of 8 experts and send it to Albania. Solidarity is at the heart of the European Union”, Soreca declared.

The aid arrived from Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia, as well as non-member countries, Montenegro and Norway.
