Albanian police take wide-ranging action against illegal betting operations

Legal betting shops were closed more than a year ago in Albania but gambling began to operate illegally.

After numerous complaints from the public, police and the prosecution office carried out a wide-ranging operation against illegal betting on Thursday evening, arresting 115 people.

During the operation were seized large amounts of money, gambling computers, firearms, dozens of mobile phones and other accessories used in organizing and implementing the criminal activity.

The action took place while the Europa League matches were being played and when the illegal betting points were fully operational in Tirana, Durres, Elbasan, Fier, Berat, Korça, Lezha and Shkodra. In the operation were involved 1540 police forces, while 486 searches were carried out on bars and other premises suspected of carrying out this criminal activity.
