Thaci: “Final agreement with Serbia, by popular referendum”

“Kosovo and Serbia need to close the enmity chapter with an agreement
for normalizing mutual relations”, said the President of Kosovo, Hashim
Thaci, in an interview for Radio Free Europe.

The Kosovo leader is currently in New York, attending the UN General Assembly. He confirmed that the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, under the leadership of the EU, will take a new dynamics with the purpose of reaching a final agreement, which, according to him, would mean a complete normalization of the relations between the two states, and conciliation between the people.

Thaci defended the idea that the final agreement with Serbia should undergo a referendum.

“I think that beyond the institution leaders, beyond the government and the Parliament, the sovereign people should be the one to express his will for an agreement”, Thaci said.

According to him, the final agreement with Serbia, which he called historic, should not be held hostage of daily problems of political parties.

“It should be above the interests of any party, ideology and personality”, Thaci confirmed, asking this way the opposition’s cooperation.
