Gas Pipelines for increasing security and integration

The USA support the construction of the Ionian-Adriatic pipeline, which
starts in Fier, (where it connects with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline,
bringing natural gas from Azerbaijan) and ends in Croatia.

The US Ambassador to Tirana, Donald Lu, said that the IAP will increase the energy supply for Albania and the region.

“It will help regional security, cooperation and economic growth, and it will also liberate Europe from its dependency on Russian gas. The USA has always supported IAP as a natural development, after the southern corridor is complete”, Lu declared.

A conference was held in Tirana for this project, and it seems that the EU as well is going to give support for this cooperation.

“EU is the muscle behind this project. We are happy to see the progress in the discussions about gas projects. TAP and IAP are among the 10 priorities of the Junker Commission, so that energy is safer and more affordable. The EU will support cooperation with Western Balkan countries, so that the project is implemented on time”, said the EU ambassador to Tirana, Romana Vlahutin.

Turning Albania into an important node of pipelines is increasing the perspective for consumer use in our country as well.

The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, said that using gas for producing energy will be very important for Albania.

“Albania spent more than 80 million USD to import energy this summer. Albanian consumers should be happy from this chance to pay less for energy”, said the US Ambassador.

Based on the feasibility study, IAP will be 511 km long, from Fier to Split, Croatia, and a total cost of 618 million EUR. The investment will be private, and everal companies have shown interest.
